Why we left the traditional path
Project Unschooling — and the mentorship I offer here — is rooted in a personal decision that changed how I see education, growth, and life itself. In 2022, I began homeschooling my son Aarfeen. That choice was not only about curriculum. It was about parenting differently: trusting natural learning, reducing the noise of grades and comparison, and building a home where curiosity could lead.
Stepping away from traditional schooling asked me to grow as a parent first. I had to learn how to observe, how to hold space, how to stay steady when doubt or outside pressure arrived. Homeschooling reshaped our children’s education because it first reshaped me.
How parenting reshaped Aarfeen’s journey
Freed from a rigid classroom, Aarfeen’s curiosity blossomed into meaningful action. At just six years old, he became one of the youngest climate leaders — addressing primary students at Stow Primary School in Scotland. That moment showed me what becomes possible when a child’s interests are taken seriously and a parent chooses to walk beside them instead of managing them toward someone else’s timeline.
Unschooling and home learning gave him room to learn from the world around him — to think deeply and act purposefully. His love for nature grew into activism at an age when many children are only beginning to find their voice. His work later reached wider audiences, including a feature by Ellie Linden in The Earth Gang blog and a guest appearance on Paul Webb’s B2B Energy podcast. Those milestones amplified his voice — and reminded me why nurturing a child’s passion without unnecessary limits matters.
Today, Aarfeen is channeling his experiences into a storybook to inspire climate action among children his age. Storytelling has become another way he learns, leads, and contributes.
A wider life of learning
Homeschooling has also allowed Aarfeen to grow across many interests — Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, swimming, gymnastics, football, roller skating, languages, math, religion, and computer skills. This is not a race to cover subjects. It is a holistic life of learning: skills, character, body, mind, and purpose moving together.
Most importantly, Aarfeen has become a role model for his younger brother Rafay — inspiring him to embrace curiosity and explore the world in his own way. Watching that sibling influence has deepened my conviction that parenting is the real curriculum.
Why I mentor parents
Through our journey, I have seen how home education can unlock a child’s potential by easing the stress of traditional schooling, peer pressure, and the relentless race for grades. It nurtures individuality, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning.
I share this story — and I mentor parents — because I know the inner work this path asks of us. Homeschooling is not only about children’s education. It is about how we reflect, stay resilient, and meet daily challenges as humans raising humans.
